O Holy Night (Stand)

Let me start out by saying that I’m probably one of the luckiest girls on the planet, because I have the best mom and sister-in-law.   Also,  the stars magically aligned in my favor. Here is the breakdown of how these babies ended up in our bedroom.

  • Jessica, my sister-in-law, got a job at Pier 1 for the holidays.
  • The Hayworth Nightstands went on sale.
  • Jessica gets a 25% employee discount
  • We have the same name (Do you see where I am going with this?)
  • Mom decided the sale in conjunction with Jessica’s discount is too good to pass up.
  • Enter my credit card, Jessica’s discount, and a blank check to follow.

= beating the Pier 1 system, and getting two nightstands for basically the retail price of one.

AMAZING!

This is what I would like to call the best Christmas gift, ever.

Aren’t they stunning?  I love how open and light they feel, compared to the heavy three drawer wood nightstands we had prior.  Don’t mind the turtle lamp, though.  It’s not staying forever.   Pretty soon we’ll have cute lamps, and docking stations and a catch-all on our nightstands.    Downgrading to just one drawer was a challenge, but it forced me to finally clean out some things.   By “some things”,  I’m referring mostly to our candy drawer, may it rest in peace.   Thankfully,  my office benefited from the candy clean out, because now the office candy drawer is stocked to the brim with Mentos.  Ahhh,  the fresh maker.

What’s not so stunning?

The quality of these pictures.   Maybe one of these days I’ll upgrade to a fancy camera, and not my very old point and shoot.

Now with the nightstands in place,  the next on the list of things to do is finish restoring the dresser (also known as my sad little nightmare),  paint the bedroom, and magically figure out how to upholster a headboard.   Easy enough, right?

Suuuuuuuurrrreeeee!

Jumping Off Point

Ever since we’ve moved into the house,  I’ve never been happy with our bedroom.   Considering the amount of time spent,  we should absolutely love it, right?  You would think.  But alas,  it’s just the place that we hang our clothes, and lay our heads.   My dream is to create an environment in the bedroom that is calming, and inspiring.   With that being said,  I’ve been playing around with ideas for a while now and I think I finally have come up with something.  The challenge with designing anything in our house is making sure it’s not too girly.  Andrew lives here too, remember?  (That’s me, reminding myself when I go into design land. LaLaLa)  In trying to think of a color scheme, blue seemed like the most obvious choice.  Not only is it calming, but manly.  Manly, yes, but I like it too.  If you know what that’s from, I’ll love you forever.

Once I had blue in mind, I wanted to add a touch of glamour.  It all started when I was watching Sarah’s House (SARAH RICHARDSON IS MY HERO!) and she was doing the master bedroom in the worst house on the best block.   She used these amazing mirrored night stand, and I adored the idea.  I thought it would be perfect in our not so master bedroom.   Chic in appearance, but not to heavy on the eye.   Of course, the ones she used were a wee bit over our “you’re luck you have a job, you’ll never see a raise again”  income.   Much thanks to Pier 1,   I found beautiful mirrored night stands a little bit more reasonably priced (but not by much.)    Granted, it might take us 6 months to save up for them, but at least we know what we’re saving for!   Once I had the night stand in mind, everything else fell into place.   My obsession with Jonathan Adler, as well as ikat, all have a home in this not so master bedroom design.  With the ideas rolling,  I can’t wait to start picking up the pieces to get this bedroom refresh rolling.

With purchasing a chest of drawers rather than a traditional dresser,  I’ll save enough room to make a little reading nook.   I’m so excited about the prospects of having someplace cozy to snuggle up with a good book. Don’t get me wrong, I love the couch and all but sometimes I just don’t want to be subjected to what’s on the TV.

P.S:  The best part of re-doing the bedroom?  Finally buying a queen size bed.    Between Andrew and Columbia, there is not much room for me on our full size bed!

What do you think of the design idea, so far?
