Brace Face: 14 Weeks

Last friday, I went for an adjustment on my upper and lower braces. I was excited to go to this adjustment because I knew my orthodontist would give me orders to get my bicuspids extracted.  Yes, I am aware of the fact that I’m insane for WANTING to get my teeth pulled.  Truth of the matter is, I know that once those teeth are out – we really can get moving. Even the doctor said that judging by how well everything is going, I may be done in 12 months. (WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!)  Having the lower brackets on for over 4 weeks now, I have yet to see a lot of movement.  However, the teeth were much more crowded.  When I get the two lower teeth pulled, I am sure that will help a considerable amount.

Getting the lower bottom braces on was way more painful that I thought it would be. I had all kinds of sores in my lower lip. So much so that they added a bumper to my wire this time around.  I tell you what, that bumper is a life saver!  I don’t wake up in the morning with a permanent impression of my lower wire in the inside of my lip.  That wasn’t all to fun.  During the first four weeks of the lower braces, eating was very difficult.  Even soft things were hard to chew!

I’m trying to not let myself get bummed out about having braces. I’ve been carded for R rated movies. Confused for a high schooler.  And some days, you just don’t feel as pretty.  I really underestimated what braces would do to my self-esteem.  Like always, I have to keep reminding myself that in the end – it will ALL be worth it.

But, I really do miss eating corn on the cob.

Brace Face: 8 Weeks

I’m happy to report that my lower braces are finally on!  Despite the fact that everyone says that the lower braces hurt more than the upper, I’ve been really eager to get them on. I’m sure that by tomorrow I’ll be singing a different tune, but…what are you going to do? The appointment went really well, for the most part. While wearing the lip retractor, glue got on my bottom lip and burnt the crap out of it.  Three white spots on my lips later…But they say beauty is pain so I’ll go along with that.

While attaching the wire, they let me know they were using a .14 gauge titanium wire, which has limited flexibility. Basically, that means they aren’t messing around and not really easing me into the movement.  But, that was my decision since I don’t want to go prolong treatment more than I have to. When my uppers were first put on, they used a .12 gauge wire, and then upgraded to a .14 gauge. So, I like the fact that hopefully the upper and lower progress will be relativity close since we’re skipping a step now. Keeping that in mind, my orthodontist is still holding firm that I should be finished with treatment in the 18 months that he originally anticipated! Woooooo!

Moving right along!

Smoothie Fanatic

Now with the dang braces,  I’ve become a complete and utter smoothie junkie.  On days where the metal mouth is more sore, smoothies are the perfect way to get a little nutritiousness without having the sudden urge to tear my brackets off.   Being the little internet surfer that I am,  I’ve spent hours upon hours searching for easy and tasty smoothie recipes that I couldn’t mess up.   You’ll soon learn I’m a travesty in the kitchen, so easy is key.

First things first, I had to tackle the whole not having a blender thing.   Blenders basically make or break the smoothie, so I wanted to make sure we got a blender of good quality without breaking the bank.  Our first pick was the Oster Classic Beehive Blender for a few reasons.   The first is that it was priced under 60 dollars.   The second reason is that it does look like a beehive, and Andrew loves bees.  Not the most brilliant reason to buy a blender, but it’s been working in this case. Another big reason as to why we chose this blender is the fact that the container is actually glass, and not plastic.  Love it!

What a doll!  Blend away beautiful blender! (For the record, it blends like a champ.)

Since I tend to drink a smoothie instead of having breakfast (toast and cereal have become quite difficult to munch on),  I’ve been mixing in protein power to beef up the nutrition factor, and to make sure I stay full until lunch.  The brand I’ve been using is EAS AdvantEdge Soy Protein. It’s as tasty as all get up, and when you’re mixing it in with strawberries, you can’t even taste the texture of it.  It’s blends so well!   I have yet to try the Chocolate flavored powder, but the Vanilla flavor is wonderful!

This has become my most favorite smoothie recipe:

  • 2 cups of various frozen berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries)
  • 2 cups of apple juice
  • 2 scoops of soy protein
  • 1 cup of vanilla yogurt

Hmm, hmm, good!
