Holiday Design: You have how many Christmas trees?

To answer to that question:  9.   At least, I’m pretty sure it’s 9.   With that many,  it’s easy to lose track!   But, to my Uncle Tom, that’s just the holiday usual.  To him, there is no such thing as not going all out during the holidays.  Without a doubt, holiday decor at his house always looks fantastic.  The highlight of the holiday decorations was most definitely the roll of wrapping paper used as wallpaper in the dining room area.  Trimmed with poinsettia napkins,  it creates the perfect festive space to serve the completely traditional (or is it just tradition to us?) Chinese food dinner, buffet style. For the cost of the roll of paper, and napkins, plus an hour’s time – it is a perfect example of being holiday decor savvy.  Uncle Tom would more than likely like me  to mention the fact that during that hour, he was ALSO on the phone.  What a multi-tasker!

I would love to say that during our time at his house on Christmas, I was able to take really wonderful photos of all of the trees.  Since, I didn’t have my digital camera with me (or so I thought, but it ended up being in my purse the whole time, and I’m apparently blind),  I used my phone to take some of these photos.  Pardon the quality, because it was really hard to get the detail and my little phone couldn’t take a picture of the grandeur of the main event Christmas tree!  The tree was just too big, and the scale just wasn’t jivin’.

All I can say is that next year, maybe I won’t refer to wrapping paper as “the enemy”.   Maybe I will embrace the paper, now having been shown the ways.

A Colorful Centerpiece

Wait, you mean to tell me that Christmas is on Sunday and I still don’t have a centerpiece?  Oh geez!  After spending hours online looking for ideas to fill my obvious void, I rummaged through cabinets until I found a clear glass apothecary bottle that I got for free (!!) at work.  Glassware?  Check.  Now, what to put inside?   Thankfully, I took it upon myself to head over to CVS yesterday and found that their holiday merchandise was marked down by 50%.  Translation:  BUY EVERYTHING!   When I say buy everything,  I’m only referring to 5 packs of ornaments and two bundles of purple beads.  Clearly.  The cost?  10 bucks!   I love buying decorations when the season is over.  You get much more bang for your buck, that’s for sure.    3 packs of ornaments later,  I had an interesting centerpiece coming along.   Something was missing though.   I grabbed a red charger, pine cones from the front yard, and a bundle of purple beads.  Voila!  I’ve got myself a centerpiece for less than 10 bucks!  I’m quite pleased with the outcome, if I do say so myself.

After it’s completion,  I was inspired to try and tackle figuring out how to use my camera.  Macro setting?  ISO?  What does any of that gibberish mean?   All I could remember is something Andrew told me a week ago,  ”Take the picture with the light BEHIND you.”   Really?  I can’t just take the picture?  I have to plan out lighting too?  Since my little Canon point and shoot doesn’t know what I’m trying to accomplish,  I guess I do have to put a little thought behind these things.   Once I uploaded the photos,  I was quite pleased.  Not too bad for a novice.  :-)

That last photo I took was with the light infront of me.  What can I say?  I’m a rebel.

Holiday Inspiration

It would be wonderful to say that Andrew and I have successfully completed phase two of our holiday decorations,  but that is not that case.   Quite frankly,  I have a feeling it will stay the case this holiday season.   When I asked him the other day if we were going to send out holiday cards  this year,  he responded with a very quick no.   Could it be?  Are we not feeling very festive this year?  Sadly, that just might be the case.  Between the grueling semester I just finished, and Andrew’s insane work schedule,  the holidays may have lost it’s luster.   But alas,  we can’t NOT have a nice Christmas!   In order to get back into the jolly spirit,  I decided to walk down memory a lane (it was a very short walk), and found the picture Andrew and I used on our holiday cards last year.

Aren’t we cute?  Yeah,  we really are.  I look even especially cute in a sleigh being driven by a zebra.  Thanks Busch Gardens!

Please enjoy this close up of faux holly berries and pine cones to set the mood.   I’m trying to get back in the swing of things, here!

But let’s face it.

It’s really hard to actually enjoy this  time of year in Florida, when it’s still 80 degrees outside.   Maybe if it was chilly out, and I could bundle myself up on the couch wearing a hoodie, and drinking hot chocolate then I would be all “HEYYYYY CHRISTMAS!!!”  But, seeing as how I can’t do that without sweating bullets, I won’t jump aboard the Christmas train just yet. However, that will not stop me from looking at pictures and trying to find some holiday inspiration.

That last picture is making me feel super festive!  Okay, so maybe I will start diggin’ the holiday soon enough.   Now, I just have to convince the husband.   But, he’s currently too busy getting bit up by Columbia, who I affectionately called “chicken head” earlier.   She was trying to put her head in my chicken.  It made sense at the time.   Now, I’ve come to realize that “chicken head” has a whole other meaning, and if Columbia knew it….well, she would be offended.
