A Back-Ordered Bathroom Sconce and a Medallion

As you may have gathered,  we have a lot of un-finished projects going on in the house.   The bedroom, the bathroom, the office, the backyard, the hallway…and the list goes on.  At least now I can finally say that we are closing in on the end of the bathroom.   Over the weekend, I finally pulled the  trigger and bought a sconce that I’ve had my eye on for over a year now.  Of course, it’s back ordered til the middle of April, but at least now I can stop agonizing over it.  The amount of time I spend deliberating g over things is ridiculous.  If I totaled up the amount of hours spent browsing and planning things for the house, it would probably be at least 1/3 of my life.   I’ve got to channel my inner Susan Powter and “STOP THE INSANITY!”   Which is what I did today when I finally bought the sconce.  After that, it was time to go back to my mental check of list of what needed to get done.

  1. Buy two piece ceiling medallion to mount with chandelier  (This way we can avoid painting the ceiling.  The paint still looks good, except for the area our old light fixture was.)
  2. Buy new double sconce for above vanity mirror
  3. Buy new vanity mirror
  4. Patch holes and old back splash to prep for painting
  5. Paint walls turquoise
  6. Hang new sconce
  7. Hang new mirror

Once that list is done, could it be so that the project is done?  I think so, for now! Of course I’d like to re-finish the cabinetry, but that is something in the future especially when we have so many other projects going.  After getting everything on that list done, the bathroom will be much cleaner looking and more “finished” looking that I won’t really even pay attention to the cabinetry.  That’s really the trick, right? Fix everything up around one thing that you don’t really pay attention to that one thing.  Yes, I quite like that logic.

I did a once over the mental list, I clicked on over to HomeDepot.com and finally bought the medallion.  It was only 20 dollars.  20 dollars.  I waited a year to buy something that was 20 dollars.   This seems absurd to me considering Gilt Group had a Rebecca Minkoff sale of which I did not blink twice at buying a few things from.  What is my problem?  Maybe it’s more fun to buy shoes and purses then it is to buy things from Home Depot?  Only in the instant gratification department.   Don’t worry, I already know I’m certifiable crazy.

So now with two major components on the way, I’m  getting really excited to see the end.   Hurry up and get here April! I am ready for you light fixture!  We’re leaning towards painting when we already have the light fixture in the house, ready for install, that way we don’t have to uninstall, install, and uninstall and install again.  Doesn’t seem like a good use of time.  Or is that our way of procrastinating?  The world may never know.

Happy Monday, everyone! I’m looking forward to taking this week, and kicking it’s butt.  If if that doesn’t happen, well…I’ll take a nap instead.

Woodland creatures and the bathroom update

When Andrew and I bought the house a little over 3 years ago, we were fairly content with the bathroom and were happy to throw up a cute shower curtain and shut the door on the design.  But, then you nest and decide that you hate everything and want to start over.  You may have picked up on that in previous posts when we changed out the sink and the faucet,  the knobs on the cabinets and the towel and toilet paper hanger. Oh! And let’s not forget about the chandelier as well!  With all of these changes, we must have forgotten to actually finish?

Let’s recap a list from a post from February of 2012:

  1. Paint cabinets (they are beige too!)
  2. Come up with back splash ideas.
  3. Paint the bathroom.
  4. Hang chandelier that I got for my birthday two years ago.
  5. Buy new towels and get a new shower curtain.
  6. Get two cute shelves to mount on the wall above the toilet.
  7. Buy new knobs for the cabinets.

So at least there are a few things we have crossed off the list in the past year.  But this is what happens when life and school get in the way.  Sometimes we have to just step away from the project and come back to it at a later date.   Here we are at this later date and I’m itching to change something up in the bathroom.  I had mentioned earlier in the week how I found a gorgeous shower curtain rod at Target.  A beautiful brushed nickel rod with a hammered finial, which conveniently matches the trash can and I didn’t even realize at purchase.  (Love when things like that randomly come together!

IMG_0766Woo! Isn’t that a beautiful site to be seen? You wouldn’t think that a curtain rod would be so exciting, but it really is when the one you have is completely rusted.

IMG_0761See?  Not really so cute anymore.  Between the actual rod being rusted, as well as the hooks, it is fairy gross.

IMG_0762Here we have a full length shot of the curtain.  As you’ll notice, it’s a little bit on the short side.  Apparently I had made the mistake of washing it, and then throwing it in the dryer.  Shrink happened.

IMG_0763Not only did shrink happen, but then we constantly had the pesky roll up issue too.  Now, raise your hand if you’re going to spend your time ironing your shower curtain?  If you are raising your hand right now, I envy how much time you have on your hands.  Clearly ironing was not going to happen, so I’ve learned to ignore the issue but it did really bother me at times.

You’ll also notice the fact that the chandelier is much bolder in color than the shower curtain.  That’s primarily because the curtain was bought to match the paint, and the chandelier just kind of happened.  Eventually it will all come together, but that just hasn’t happened yet.  I’m thinking a nice aqua blue would be the ideal paint color.

Like I had mentioned before, Target was a bust when it comes to shower curtains.  I didn’t want something that was patterned all over, but it had to be bold and feature the colors of the chandelier.  Thankfully, I remembered that Urban Outfitters always has an interesting collection of home goods, especially curtains.  (We bought our dining room curtains from there many moons ago!)

IMG_0771Voila! We have a new shower curtain with a deer and a peacock.  How could I possibly resist?  The colors match absolutely perfect with the chandelier! Also, another great part of this shower curtain?  It was on sale!

IMG_0769As you’ll notice, the curtain is nice and long now and with no pesky roll up.  I know now that when its time to wash the shower curtain, I’ll make sure to just air dry it to avoid any issue.

IMG_0768Because the previous rings on the shower curtain were curtain specific and rusted, it was  time for new rings.  I fell in love with these when I saw them because I love the shape.  Remind me of old light bulbs! And you know what else is awesome?  They move so fast across the curtain rod! No more getting hung up when you pull to open and close it.  Just a quick glide.  Can’t beat that!  You don’t realize how annoying something is until it doesn’t exist anymore, that’s for sure.

Woo! So happy about the change.  I love the fact that something as simple as a shower curtain can refresh a room.  Once everything was up, I knew I was missing something.  New towels!  We headed over to JC Penney over the weekend and picked up royal blue and purple hand towels from the new Pantone collection.  Not only are they soft as the day is long, but they are SO vibrant in color.  I definitely recommend that you go check them out.

Tell me those colors aren’t stunning?  So very Jonathan Adler-esque!

The Elephant is Still in the Bathroom

Remember how I mentioned how we are really good at avoiding certain projects, by starting other ones? Well, that still stands. And I’m sure that’s a trait that Andrew and I will not be able to shed, as hard as we may try. Back in April, I shared with our elephant in the bathroom. The back splash has yet to have been worked on. We’re still debating our options, which really translates to the fact that I can’t muster up the mental energy to wrap my head around it.  But, that doesn’t stop me from looking at our towel rod, and toilet paper hanging – and deciding that I hate it.

For whatever the reason, the towel rod mounted to the side of our vanity has seen better days. Maybe it’s been “fixed” too many times but the screws have been threaded, and it never has a tight fit.  Add a towel, and the cords from my hair tools getting stuck on it and you’ve got yourself a problem. We were constantly attaching the stupid thing.  Enough is enough!

Walking around the bathroom aisle at Lowe’s, it was becoming really obvious that we couldn’t just change out the towel bar and not the toilet paper hanger. The original owners of the house had a yen for polished nickel fixtures, which I hate. If it’s not brushed, I want no part of it. Since we’d already changed out the cabinet hardware, door handle, as well as the faucet – it was time to switch the last items over to brushed nickel. New hangers it is!

Changing out the towel hanger bar was easy as can be, since we were able to use the holes from the previous bar. Even though it was a simple change, I definitely think it makes the bathroom look a lot more elegant. I love how clean brushed nickel looks compared to polished. Plus, over time the polish comes corroded and looks green. Who wants to put their towel on that?  Not us, anymore!

Now, when it comes to the toilet paper hanger that was going to be slightly more challenging since we went from a double hanger to a single. I wanted something a little less cumbersome on the wall since the bathroom is on the small side. Of course now, we’ve got holes that we need to patch and even more reason to repaint the bathroom aside from the back splash dilemma. But isn’t that just how we do things at the Evans’ household?  Just keep stacking up reasons to paint something until it becomes so obvious that there is no other choice!

Any projects you are avoiding?

Love,

J and A
